National Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan is one of Russia's oldest museums, it was founded as the Kazan city scientific-industrial Museum in 1894.

Snce 5-th of April, 1895, Kazan city scientific – industrial Museum was administered by the City Council. In 1912, the Museum was renamed in Kazan city Museum. On the 7-th of December, 1918 the City Museum was transformed into the Provincial and subordinate to the sub-Department for Museum Affairs on the protection of monuments of art and antiquities of the education Department of the Kazan Provincial Department of the RSFSR. In 1921, the Kazan Provincial Museum was transferred to the jurisdiction of the Department of museums of the Academic center of the people's Commissariat of education of Tatarstan and renamed the Central Museum of the TASSR, 25 Oct 1944 according to the Decree of Council of people's Commissars of the USSR No. 20405 received the status of a State Museum. In 1946, the State Museum of Tatarstan enters the jurisdiction of the Department of kultprosvetuchrezhdeny at the Council of Ministers of the TASSR. In 1953, the State Museum of Tatarstan enters the jurisdiction of the Ministry of culture of Tatarstan. In 1981, the museum was transformed into the State Museum of Tatarstan, and in 2001 received the status of a National Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan, now – the State budgetary culture establishment "the national Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan, whose founder is the Ministry of culture of the Republic of Tatarstan.
